I'm sorry. I am truly sorry. I have no idea how this could have happened.

I am the bearer of bad tidings.

It transpires that, for reasons that remain obscure, Thomas Dunne, the respected publishers of books such as Peter Ackroyd's six part History of England, through to striking new works of fiction like David Wong's John Dies at the End has, and I can hardly bring myself to say it, decided to publish Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute in North America, a continent hitherto spared that terrible contagion.

I can barely see to type, the tears are streaming so.

But, before you run off to stockpile batteries, ammunition, and canned food prior to walling yourselves up in the cellar, it is my unhappy lot to tell you that the coming apocalypse will be yet more terrible still.

In an act of elemental villainy that has left doomsday cults around the world nodding appreciatively, Thomas Dunne has requested -- Nay! Demanded! -- that a fourth Johannes Cabal novel be written, presumably to finish off any survivors.

The timeline is not set in stone, but I believe the intention is for Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute to be released approximately a year hence in North America, and the as-yet-unnamed fourth Johannes Cabal novel to follow a year later in the autumn of 2014.

Indeed, the autumn of the whole of that once proud continent.

Go to your families, your loved ones. Hold them close, now that you know your time is so cruelly limited. Tell them everything is going to be okay, though the lie curdles in your throat.

I'm so sorry.

Best. Post. Ever.

Oh dear. I'll have to warn everyone I know. Perhaps there's time to flee the country.

Cah! Americans! I tell them the Apocalypse is coming and they're all "Yay!"

Bunch of Pollyannas.

Excellent newes! (I threw in the extra e just because.)

Oh, hi, Gwenda! Thanks! It is pretty cool, isn't it? 2013 is going to be a busy year. I'll be diving into Cabal#4 first thing in January, then (assuming it's a well-behaved novel and takes as long to write as I think it will and not significantly longer) I'll be going more or less straight onto Russalka #3, and then if editing duties don't get in the way, I want a shot at NaNoWriMo, too. It could be a three novel year. Fingers crossed.

Fantastic! Now I can finally read the gosh-darned thing.

(Pardon my language. It gets salty when I'm excited.)

I'm more concerned about things getting salty when you're excited.
31st Oct, 2012 19:13 (UTC)
I thank you for my concern, which I can only assume is directed at my blood pressure, and the effects of such excessive saltiness thereon. I assure you that the situation has been taken well in hand, as my associate in the icon would affirm.

Another Cabal!
Terrible news, indeed. A book tour is called for, although I fear you'll be pilloried by various evangelicals for spreading belief in paganism and witchcraft. Like Cabal, you may be pursued by a torch-wielding mob, although it's more likely to be a posse of big-haired female Republicans armed with leaf blowers. Great to hear another Cabal is on the way. Start writing. Now.

Re: Another Cabal!
I'm having trouble getting past "leaf blowers." Leaf blowers? Why on Earth would they be armed with leaf blowers?

Supercharged leaf blowers. They can flay the skin off a person in three seconds

Re: Another Cabal!
Everything's bigger in America: there are leaf blowers that'll put you through a cinder block wall.

Re: Another Cabal!
But you've got guns all over the place. In cereal boxes, given out at the mall, literally growing from gun trees. Why use a leaf blower, no matter how ferocious? I don't understand.

Re: Another Cabal!
I find the image of a mob of big-haired Republican woman armed with leaf blowers chasing someone down a street an arresting one. I'm odd that way. And guns are just too prosaic for a special occasion like persecuting a writer. Guns are for bumping off someone who nabs your parking spot.

Re: Another Cabal!
Reminds one of that wonderful scene in Quatermass and the Pit where the mind-controlled mob kills the "outsider" with a wind storm
31st Oct, 2012 03:52 (UTC)
Grin - and if I haven't gotten my copy of the British edition back from Victoria beforehand, leastwise I'll be able to read it THEN.
31st Oct, 2012 03:57 (UTC)
I suppose I can bite the bullet and buy as many copies of The Fear Institute as possible, so as to save others from being infected. Then I can use the copies to attack my enemies.

31st Oct, 2012 13:36 (UTC)
That would be very selfless. I, my agents, and my publishers hope and trust your enemies number in their thousands?
31st Oct, 2012 14:32 (UTC)
Very cool news!
31st Oct, 2012 15:10 (UTC)
Yes, I'm very pleased. Took a while, but Cabal's found a good new home in North America.

What can I say? It all got a bit... complicated behind the scenes. Still, better late than never.
1st Nov, 2012 13:40 (UTC)
This is terrible news and everyone should feel terrible about it.

The demons that sometimes take control of my body and force me to purchase specific books are sobbing with joy, though! Demon tears, all over my new upholstery.
1st Nov, 2012 19:12 (UTC)
If specific books be the food of demons, read on.
That by surfeit, they may sicken and die.

See, Shakespeare (sort of) has the solution. You need to read the Cabal books (and "Katya's World," out on the sixth) repeatedly to clear up your demon infestation. Be warned, the efficacy of a book only lasts for a single reading so be sure to keep buying new copies. It's medicine.

Well this is unfortunate.
Was having an average to good day and then I read this.

*Begins loading high powered weapons*

Side note: Holy crap, I've been waiting for this for an annoyingly long amount of time. Keep up the awesome work Mr Howard.
1st Nov, 2012 19:13 (UTC)
Re: Well this is unfortunate.
The long wait was an annoying to me as anyone. Believe me, I wanted TFI to be out in the US at the same time it came out in the UK.
1st Nov, 2012 18:26 (UTC)
This is all assuming that there's anything left of this continent after the Mayans have had their way with us in December...

Which is a huge shame because I've been looking forward to the fourth Cabal book an unseemly amount since the third one was released.
1st Nov, 2012 19:16 (UTC)
Oh, I doubt anything will be left by December. "Katya's World" is out next week, so you're all screwed long before December.

I suspect I may be the only author who promotes his books by suggesting that they may trigger an apocalypse if you read them. It's not so much reverse psychology as no psychology at all.
1st Nov, 2012 22:01 (UTC)
Now I can't help but think how much cooler it would be if politicians campaigned that same way.

That's fantastic news! I have to say that I have already spread "that terrible contagion" of your "The Fear Institute" here in the States. I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of it and ordered a copy from overseas when it first came out (the wait for its delivery was excruciating). As I am a huge fan of yours (Johannes Cabal The Necromancer is my favorite book) and a typical impatient American I will politely ask if there is any chance you could publish the 4th book here in the States at the same time it is published overseas?
27th Nov, 2012 20:51 (UTC)
Well, the situation at the moment is there is only a deal for the fourth book in place in the USA. So as things stand, the US is getting it first. I'd be surprised if a UK deal isn't worked out in time, but since the writing schedule is based on the US publication, a UK edition would be at most more or less at the same time, and possibly later.

Again, that's great news! Thanks for taking the time to respond and keep up the great work!

At Long Last!
I for one am delighted, DELIGHTED that at last the New World is finally going to get the apocalypse we've been so long expecting. Time and time again we've been promised death and destruction only to be disappointed at every turn. And now, not one but TWO threats to humanity, The Fear Institute and yet ANOTHER Johannes Cabal... well, it fair gives me palpitations. My only hope is that I barely survive the first in order to experience the second.

I'm all a flutter with happiness. Now I must run and tell the other inmates the good news!

12th Jun, 2013 22:12 (UTC)
Oh, dear me, I suppose we North Americans will have to prepare ourselves for impending doom...

(Seriously, though, I'm moving to England in a couple of months. What does your release date generally look like on that side of the ocean?)

Thank f*cking god.

Honestly, it's about time.

Cabal the 4th
Mr. Howard,
The world eagerly awaits Cabal's next adventure. Please, we beg of you, write quickly! I do not know how much longer I can bear the absence of Cabal from my already dim,-and growing dimmer still with each passing day- miserable life.

Re: Cabal the 4th
A fourth Cabal novel? Really? I don't recall ever saying there would be such a thing. Unless, I guess, you mean "The Brothers Cabal," due for a US release at the end of September, and for which the blurb reads:

"Horst Cabal has risen from the dead. Again.

Horst, the most affable vampire one is ever likely to meet, is resurrected by an occult conspiracy that wants him as a general in a monstrous army. Their plan: to create a country of horrors, a supernatural homeland. As Horst sees the lengths to which they are prepared to go and the evil they cultivate, he realizes that he cannot fight them alone. What he really needs on his side is a sarcastic, amoral, heavily armed necromancer.

As luck would have it, this exactly describes his brother.

Johannes Cabal returns in the one-of-a-kind fantasy series that will appeal to readers of Jasper Fforde, Richard Kadrey, and Neil Gaiman."

Is that what you meant?

Yes. I believe that is exactly what I meant. The months leading up to September in which I have to wait will be pure agony, I assure you.

There are currently no UK publication plans in place, I am very sorry to say.

Re: Cabal the 4th
I'm sorry about that too. Being in America, however, I am relieved that there are publication plans here. I very much look forward to reading the latest book and am very excited for the return of Cabal, Horst and, hopefully, Leonie.
